Sophie Isabella Ryan was born on October 3rd, 2012 weighing in at a whopping 9lbs 7.4oz. She was the picture of health, and everything my husband Josh and I could have ever dreamt of. But when Sophie’s left eye began shaking when she was only 8 ½ months old, a series of doctor’s appointments led to an MRI that uncovered the unthinkable.
On June 23rd, 2013 Sophie was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumor that luckily has a 90% survival rate, but unluckily has an over 85% recurrence rate. Even worse, the only option for these tumors was chemotherapy, with little to no developments made over the last forty years for kids stricken by any form of cancer.
After first completely dismissing cannabis as an option due to us being stigmatized about the dangers around the plant, we stopped and took a second look when legendary talk show host and movie actress Ricki Lake, and her documentary film partner Abby Epstein were connected to us through social media. They told us about the film they were producing about kids using cannabis for cancer, now on Netflix titled Weed the People, and our lives forever changed. You can watch Sophie take her first dose of cannabis, and yes there was THC in it, at only 9 months old in the film.
Now 7 years later, Sophie is off chemo after taking her last dose on October 23rd, 2019. From her profound immunological responses, to how many times we shrank an often unshrinkable tumor, to how the cannabis helps keep her seizure free to this day, it has been incredible watching how this plant works. It also kept her healthier than what is even close to normal, mitigated hair loss, and gave her the ability to heal from surgeries that stunned even the most experienced neurosurgeon…she became a walking miracle to every doctor who treated her.
Sophie is the inspiration behind CannaKids and CKSoul, and continues to speak all over the country about her personal journey. She is also the inspiration behind the groundbreaking cancer research led by Dr. Anahid Jewett that transpired after her father and I were desperate to get her type of disease more research. You can read all about where the science is under Our Dedication to Research page.
Cannabis has been the best thing that has ever happened to Sophie and our family, and we are now beginning to understand why through our research. We will continue to spread this education globally, while providing the same quality products that have continued to bring thousands of our patients, and Sophie success over the last 5+ years.
